Westpac Bank announces Mobile Website for Windows Phones, we wonder if there is an app as well

Westpac have announced today that Windows Phone users will now be allowed to access the Westpac Mobile baking site much like fellow Android, iPhone and BlackBerry users (From the 1st of September, tomorrow). This of course is much appreciated since we have been craving the use of at least a proper mobile site on Windows Phone devices. What this means is that Windows Phone users will now be able to head on to westpac.com.au and be redirected to the mobile site, made just for Windows Phone Users (at least that is what we can summarize from what we have been told).

With this latest release Harry Wendt, General Manager, Online & Mobile said: “The explosive growth in mobile banking highlights the need to continue driving innovation in digital to meet our customers’ expectations. Our customers are instrumental in shaping the way they bank with us, Windows mobile banking now puts more customers in control of their finances and provides more choice for our customers when it comes to mobile access.”

While that’s all great news as now Westpac users can at least access their online banking needs on their phone (without the darn desktop version on the phone), we still can’t help but think Westpac aren’t exactly giving Windows Phones the due diligence it deserves. After all, they do officially refer to it as Windows Mobile, despite the fact that name hasn’t been used since 2009. A simple enough mistake we suppose, but we do feel that if Westpac really wants Windows Phone users to stay with the bank, they’d pay a little more attention to the platform name. The second issue being is the lack of an app. We’ve reached out to Westpac to ask if they’ll actually create a Westpac Windows Phone app, and we’ll update this thread when we get an answer, but we were in fact hoping for a proper Windows Phone app.  Nevertheless, we’ll make do with what we have today.

As normal, you’ll need at least Windows Phone 7.5 (aka Mango) to access the mobile website. Full Press details below as well.
