Microsoft to price Windows 8 Pro at $69.99, $199 after promotion

A source close to Microsoft has finally announced their pricing for their latest operating system, Windows 8, which is being released in October. Apparently a Promotional period will follow the release till January 31st, 2013 where Windows 8 Pro will be priced at $69.99 and $199 after the January 31st date. Microsoft will also apparently offer a Windows 8 to Windows 8 Pro Upgrade path option where it will cost users $69.99 to upgrade to the Pro version. The price will revert back to $99.99 after January 31st meaning Microsoft will be giving people a good incentive to upgrade their current machines to Windows 8.

Now keep in mind, these prices will only relate to those of you who want to purchase actual Windows 8 discs, as downloading Windows 8 will cost you a cheaper $39.99. But Microsoft is bound to realize many people prefer to keep a hard copy of Windows on hand in case of troubles, so this should soothe any fears of Windows 8 being a ‘download-only’ OS.

For those of you wondering, both version of Windows 8 will be expected to be released on the 26th of October (or 27th in Australia we believe), so there’s only 2 months to go! Personally, we feel if these rumors are true (and remember, this comes from only 1 source – hardly enough to be called ‘official’) then the prices are slightly more than we would have hoped for. But who are we to argue with one of the worlds biggest software maker?

It’ll be October 26th here! New Zealand is always the first country to get it since they’re the first to get to October 26th 😛 but we’re second! 😀

I was talking about the retail copy, not the download version which might apparently be after the US. Or so I read on Twitter.

I was talking about retail too! Windows 7 was released in shops here on October 22, and then many hours later when US came along to their October 22.
