Modern Warfare 3 shatters sales records
So just last week we wondered how Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 sales would do, especially after the anticipation was so high that 6,000 copies were stolen in Paris (biggest fan salute to a game ever!). Well it turns out that MW3 has sold 6.5 million copies in the US and UK alone, pretty much making it the biggest launch ever of anything. That was only after 24 hours as well, and we’re waiting to hear how the first week of sales went.
So how much cash does 6.5 million copies translate to in cash? Well according to ChartTrack estimates – $400 million, beating the previous Black Ops by a cool $40 million, and easily beating Modern Warfare 2 by $90 million. Each of those two games had previously held the record for most games sold in a day, so that makes the feat much more impressive. What we want to know is, how many copies were sold when you take Australia, Europe, Asia and other regions into account as well, the number must be staggering and possibly over the 10 million mark.
Activision CEO Bobby Kotick claims that “Life-to-date sales for the Call of Duty franchise exceed worldwide theatrical box office for “Star Wars” and “Lord of the Rings,” two of the most successful entertainment franchises of all time.” We have to say that’s an outstanding effort and we’ve just got our copy for the PC today, so we’ll be looking forward to reviewing that soon. This isn’t the best news for EA’s Battlefield 3 which only sold 5 million copies in it’s first week worldwide (not a bad number at all, but not close to COD’s dominance).
How about you folks, thoughts on the number? Let us know in the comment’s below!
